The craft beer community appears to be growing stronger every year with one liquor store on the northern beaches ensuring they cater to all tastes and budgets.
Few other bottle shops or liquor stores could equal the 250 different Australian beers and up to 200 varieties of overseas beer on offer at Porter’s Liquor, in Balgowlah.
Porter’s beer manager, Steve Murray, says the market for craft beers on the Northern beaches is huge and growing all the time.
The store’s most popular beer by far is by Brookvale Brewery Dad & Dave’s, which last year outsold every other beer, including the big brand names. “We sold more Dad & Dave’s beer than we did ice last year,” he laughs.
Store owner Karen Nicholls, says the fact Dad & Dave’s was primarily sold by the case shows it is not simply for craft beer enthusiasts but is a high value, high quality option for all beer drinkers.
“The fact we have a local producer of craft beer that sells at a reasonable price is great. It’s also beer that is not beyond the normal taste palate. It’s a fresh and interesting and approachable sessionable beer.”
Porter’s also offers four different beers sold on tap in 2 litre Growler vessels or 1 litre Seaforth Squealer containers.
The beers are sold by the keg and last as long as the keg does - anywhere between a few days and two weeks.
Growlers are priced $15 and the Squealers $10 and they can be washed out once empty and brought back to be refilled with the same brew or the next one on offer.
“It’s a way of people enjoying a tap beer at home and the price depends on the cost of the particular keg,” adds beer manager Steve.
And with the cooler months here, it is likely the craft beers will be in even higher demand. So log onto Porter’s Liquor Balgowlah Facebook Page for the very latest on beer instore.
