How to minimise the tears and maximise the smiles.
It’s that time of the year again. The crisp, cool air in the mornings, Snuggies and blankets in front of the TV in the evenings and The annual pilgrimage to visit the shrine of the snow gods.
Yes - it’s time to pack our families into the car and make the drive down to Thredbo or Perisher (or for the brave few, even furtherafield) for the snow.
Even though your kids are likely to be having the time of their lives at the snow, getting them there and back is another story.
There are fewer things that are worse than having a screaming child in the back of the car for seven hours.
Plan your trip and take enough breaks
It’s hard enough for adults to sit in a car for seven hours straight, but near impossible for anyone between the ages of 4-15.
- Make sure you plan regular breaks along the way. There’s enough to do and see to break the trip into three or four different legs - and your kids will be happier after being able to stretch their legs and run off some excess energy.

Having something to distract the kids with can make the difference between arriving cranky and arriving excited.
Whatever your form of entertainment (books, toys or technology like IPads etc.), don’t bring them out immediately. Save them for when the kids actually need them (like the last 30 minute stretch before a rest break).
If giving kids technology like iPads, make sure you’ve got games, music or movies saved on the device - otherwise your internet bill might cost more than your trip to the snow!
Bribe them with snacks
Snacks are a great way to buy small blocks of peace and quiet.
Don’t always give them sugary treats though, as it might make things worse.
- Think sultanas, natural chips and other healthy snacks that won’t spike their sugar (and noise) levels.
- It’s also a good idea not to give them anything messy or sticky, otherwise your car may require a bit of a clean when you get back.
Comfort plays a big factor in having a happy road trip - not just for the kids but for you as well.
- Driving and being seated in the one position for hours on end is one of the easiest ways to get a bad back, and the last thing you want to do is spend all that time getting up there, and not be able to hit the moguls or nail the park because you’ve got a sore back.

What’s worse than not going to the snow? Not going because you’re stuck on the side of the highway with a broken down car.
