Royal Far West in Manly has been shortlisted for the Aussie Farmers Foundation Rural Hero Grant for 2016 and is now calling on community support, to help it win the public voting process.
The Aussie Farmers Foundation launched the Grant earlier this year and are offering $50,000 to one shortlisted project, which brings an innovative approach to addressing issues which impact rural Australia. Each shortlisted organisation has made a 90 second video explaining the importance of its project, with a public vote set to decide the winner of the grant.
Royal Far West has been shortlisted for the Healthy Kids Bus Stop program- a mobile clinic which provides thorough health screening for children aged 3-5 years. To date, the Bus Stop has visited 30 communities across rural and regional NSW with the Rural Hero Grant to support even more visits.
The bus will visit each community for 3-5 days, bringing with it a team of trained medical practitioners. All children will receive a general health check, hearing and oral health check and a food and nutrition check. Speech and language development and fine and gross motor skills are also assessed.
The program is designed to be fun and interactive –where children progress through health stations on the bus – hopping on and off at each station until their health assessment is completed. During this time, parents or carers are provided with an opportunity to consult further with the clinicians and understand referral pathways available to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for vulnerable children.
The program was originally developed to improve the health outcomes of country kids living in rural and regional areas. Research has shown that around one third of children living in rural parts of NSW have difficulty accessing the health services they need, meaning there are potentially 16,500 kids in need of assessment, treatment and support.
Votes can be made on the Aussie Farmers Foundation Website until 22 May. Make sure to vote so that this amazing and local charity.
